After a couple of months hiatus due to exams and hand-in’s, I rise like the proverbial phoenix with news of an absolute steamer from one of my favourite artists. Seth Sentry is the Tarantino of Australian hip-hop – not the most prolific, but what he releases into the world is poetic, considered and elegant. Sentry’s latest instalment, dispatched last night via Triple J, is ‘Float Away’, a typically accessible and grounded track dealing with everyday experiences which as per usual creates an empathetic bond between artist and audience. Layers of light piano, hammering beats and jangling percussion lift the lengthy and infectious chorus whilst Sentry’s bars remain typically tight on it’s outskirts. The track tells a story of oblivious minds, unfulfilled potential and the opt-out lifestyle, something many of his demographic, including yours truly, will appreciate. Here’s hoping we hear a lot more from Australia’s answer to Mike Skinner in the not too distant future.
