With such an illustrious group of artists currently marauding around the Australian hip-hop scene it is no surprise to see some of the genre’s understudies spread their wings and fly into the consciousness of mainstream fans. Chance Waters looks set to be the most recent act to join the likes of 360 and Urthboy in the Southern Hemisphere’s hip-hop elite after supporting the likes of Bliss N Eso, Pez and Drapht on nationwide tours.
His recent release ‘Maybe Tomorrow’, dispatched via the incredible Triple J Unearthed station, is a delightful mix of piano pop samples and concentrated bars that suggest the jump from the fringes of the scene into the centre of the hype is not too far off. Although bearing a hefty similarity to other aforementioned artists, Waters’ lyrics are less political than some and more pragmatic than most – his realistic and refreshing views are well constructed and honest, adding an enlightening depth to his steady tones. As for the musicality of ‘Maybe Tomorrow’, the mattress of bouncy piano and Lilian Blue’s gentle chorus makes a bed for Waters’ verses to gently nestle. The track maintains an impressive balance throughout and the interspersing of Blue and Waters is performed seamlessly to create a perfect marriage reminiscent of Sandy and Kirsten Cohen. Chance Waters is definitely one to watch out for and luckily for you cheeky little sausages you can begin that virtual stalking with this saucy free download.
